How Do You Find Your Lost UTR Number in the UK?

Your 10-digit UTR number can be found instantly by logging into the official HMRC app.

How Do You Find Your Lost UTR Number in the UK?

If you are trying to complete your Self-Assessment tax return or log into your tax account, you will need your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number. This is a strict 10-digit code issued by HMRC to identify you as a UK taxpayer.

Because you don't use it every day, losing your UTR number is incredibly common. Fortunately, you don't always need to spend hours waiting on the phone to HMRC to get it back. Here are the fastest ways to find your lost UTR number online and on paper.

1. Check Your Digital HMRC Account (Fastest)

If you have ever accessed your taxes online, the absolute quickest way to find your 10-digit UTR is through HMRC's official digital services.

  • The HMRC App: Download the free HMRC app onto your smartphone and log in using your Government Gateway details (or FaceID/fingerprint). Your UTR number is displayed clearly right on the main account homepage.

  • Your Online Personal Tax Account: Log into the official GOV.UK website using your Government Gateway user ID and password. Go to the "Self-Assessment" section, and your UTR will be displayed in the top right-hand corner of the account dashboard.

2. Scan Your Old Paperwork

If you cannot access your online account, look through any physical or digital files where you store financial paperwork. HMRC includes your 10-digit UTR on almost every official document they send you.

Look out for the number listed as "Reference", "UTR", or "Official Use" on:

  • Your original Welcome to Self-Assessment letter (Form SA250).

  • Any previous Notice to File a Tax Return letters.

  • Previous Tax Return Calculations (Form SA302).

  • Statement of Account letters or payment reminders from HMRC.

3. Ask Your Accountant or Bank

If you have used professional services in the past, someone else might have your UTR securely on file.

  • Your Accountant: If you have ever hired an accountant or tax adviser to submit forms for you, they are legally required to keep records of your UTR number. Send them a quick email or text.

  • Your Bank Statements: If you paid your previous tax bill directly via a bank transfer or direct debit, look at your bank statement history. The reference code you typed for the payment to HMRC might contain your 10-digit UTR number.

4. What to Do If You Still Cannot Find It

If you have checked your paperwork and cannot log in online, you will need to contact HMRC directly to request it.

  1. Call the Self-Assessment Helpline: Call HMRC on 0300 200 3310.

  1. Pass Security: You will need to answer several identity questions, including providing your full legal name, date of birth, address, and National Insurance number.

  1. Wait for the Post: For strict security reasons, HMRC cannot give you your UTR number over the phone. They will verify your identity and send your UTR number to your home address by post, which usually takes around 7 to 10 days.
